Canvas Commons - Importing a Resource from Commons
Learn how to import a resource from Canvas Commons into your own course.
- Log in to your Canvas account.
- From your courses, select the one that is in the Instructional Instance (that is, one you are teaching on campus).
The URL address will look like: https://uwplt.instructure.com/courses/xxxxxx.
If you see instead:
- https://uws-td.instructure.com/courses/xxxxxx or
- https://uws-ce.instructure.com/courses/xxxxxx
- In the Global Navigation menu, open Commons.
- The first time you access Canvas Commons, you will be asked to authorize it to access your Canvas account. Click "Authorize" to proceed. It is important that you do this step as soon as possible as this will include you in the list of active UW-Platteville Canvas Commons users, making it possible to share resources with you in our campus Canvas Commons network.
- Once you are in Commons, you will see numerous resources (Canvas pages, modules or entire courses, shared by anyone in the US who is using Canvas). To focus on the resources specific to UW-Platteville, you have two options:
- In the top right corner, click on Filter.
Scroll down to the bottom: under Shared With you should see the following options:
Select UW-Platteville. If you do not see this option, contact TTChelp@uwplatt.edu and ask them to add you to the UW-Platteville group. - Another option is to type tags in the area that says Search by title name, institution or tag.
Use the following tags:
Resources Resource Tags UW Platteville Canvas Course Basic Template UWPTTC, Template Respondus modules UWPTTC, RLDB Professional Development modules UWPTTC, Faculty Development Mandatory Attendance Report module UWPTTC, Attendance Turnitin student module UWPTTC, Turnitin Kaltura student module UWPTTC, Kaltura
Note: The resources listed in the table above are linked to SharePoint pages with more information
Also: Tags are not case sensitive and don't have to be separated by a comma.
- In the top right corner, click on Filter.
- Click on the name of the resource you want to import into your course.
- Click on Import/Download.
- A list of all your courses will appear in alphabetical order. Select the one you want to import the materials in.
Note: It allows you to make multiple sections. - Click on Import into Course.
Note: Unfortunately, if you import material from Commons into the wrong class, there is not an Undo option, and you will have to manually select and delete all the files, pages, and modules that you have imported.
