ITS Update: VPN upgrade begins January 10
Posted: 13:29:29, Thursday, Jan 6, 2022 Expiration: 13:29:29, Saturday, Jan 15, 2022
The Virtual Private Network (VPN) client on university-issued laptops and tablets, GlobalProtect VPN, will reach End-of-Life (EOL) later this spring. To ensure a seamless transition, ITS will begin pushing out a new version of the VPN client beginning at 7:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 10. If not completed prior, your client will update automatically after 2:00 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 14.
What will I see?
If VPN is installed on your university-issued Mac device, the installation will occur behind the scenes.
For university-issued Windows devices, your computer will get a notification on Monday, Jan. 10 saying, “Required software changes will be applied to your computer”. If you click “More information”, you will see, “Palo Alto version 5.2.9 is available”.
What do I need to do?
You can install the new version immediately (recommended), select a time outside your work hours, snooze the change until a later time of your choosing, or simply wait until January 14 when the change will occur automatically.
If you prefer to wait until January 14, simply close (X) the pop-up dialogue box. NOTE: The popup will continue to appear each time to start your computer, so you will need to close the box each time. After 2:00 a.m. on January 14, the installation will occur automatically when you turn on your computer.
For installations prior to January 14, depending on which option you choose, the installation may begin on its own, or you may be taken to Software Center first.
- If you find yourself in Software Center, first go to the Installation status page and select Palo Alto – GlobalProtect 5.2.9.
- The Application Details will appear. Select Install.
Once the process starts, the installation may take several minutes depending on your internet connection. When the installation is complete, your device will disconnect from university network for approximately 2-3 minutes as the process continues. After the upgrade, your device should reconnect to the university network automatically. No additional steps are required.
If you have questions about this upgrade, please contact the ITS Help Desk at 608.342.1400 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
