ITS Outage Update: Network outages Jan 17, 19-20

At approximately 2:00 p.m. today, January 20, UW-Platteville experienced an intermittent network outage that lasted 30 minutes, except on the east end of the Markee, where the network was down until 3:30 while ITS staff investigated the cause.
ITS network administrators believe today’s outage is directly related to the network outage that occurred Saturday, Jan 17 affecting campus wired and wireless connections, access to storage and other systems, network printing, VoIP telephones, and the website from 12:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. that day. Another short outage occurred Monday, Jan 19 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m., this time affecting mostly the Markee Pioneer Student Center and Ottensman Hall.
ITS staff believe these outages were caused by network driver software installed on certain newer computers that flood the network with data when the machines go into sleep mode.
Network administrators will continue working this evening updating and testing machines with problem drivers. If testing is successful, staff will push the update out to the affected computers as soon as possible. This action can be accomplished with the network up; no network outage is planned. Network staff will continue to monitor and troubleshoot the situation until a definitive solution is found.
During these network outages, it is important to note that systems such as PASS, Desire2Learn, and Business Intelligence are not affected directly even though access to the systems may be limited. Data within the systems is secure.
