ITS Update: Phishing attempt suggests cash earnings 10.13.16

The ITS Help Desk has received reports of a phishing message that suggests cash earnings, but is largely jibberish. The message comes from various NETSCAPE accounts with different subjects. There is no call to action or link to click. Most times, the name in the TO field does not even match the recipient. However, simply replying to the message could compromise your account and give the sender access to your account to phish others.

Pioneers should remember that ITS will NEVER ask for your password in an email - or through a link from an email. Never, ever. SERIOUSLY.

  • If you receive such an email from a NETSCAPE.COM address that you do not know, please DELETE immediately. These include but are not limited to:
    • bikermagter@netscape.com
    • chraetainmas@netscape.com
    • poeterlinger@netscape.com
  • If you receive a message with one of these subjects, please DELETE immediately.
    • Usefulness-Email
    • Fortuity-offer
  • If you responded to the email, CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD IMMEDIATELY and contact the ITS Help Desk at 608.342.1400 or helpdesk@uwplatt.edu.

How can I tell the message a message is not legit? We've mocked up real-life examples in the ITS Knowledge Base, including today's attempt.

If you have questions, please contact the ITS Help Desk at 608.342.1400 or helpdesk@uwplatt.edu.  You may also visit the Help Desk on the first floor of the Karrmann Library.
