ITS Alert: Phishing attempt claims your account has been restricted 10.29.17

Posted: 10:28:17, Monday, Oct 30, 2017   Expiration: 10:28:17, Monday, Nov 6, 2017

The ITS Help Desk has received numerous reports of a phishing message claiming "An Attempt has been made to sign-In [sic] your account from a new computer" and that "Your Email Access have [sic] been restricted". You are then instructed to CLICK HERE. The message appears to come from the campus account of “Seth P Linhart” or "Tanner J Lee".

Pioneers should remember that ITS will NEVER ask for your password in an email - or through a link from an email. Never, ever. SERIOUSLY.

  • If you receive such an email from "“Seth P Linhart” or "Tanner J Lee"", please DELETE immediately.
  • If you receive such an email from another sender or uwplatt account, please NOTIFY the ITS Help Desk.
  • If you clicked on the link and logged in, CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD IMMEDIATELY and contact the ITS Help Desk.

How can I tell if a message is not legit?

We've mocked up real-life examples in the ITS Knowledge Base, including today's attempt.

If you have questions about these phishing attempts, please contact the ITS Help Desk at 608.342.1400 or helpdesk@uwplatt.edu.
