Camtasia - Description and Checking Out

What is Camtasia and how to check it out for your computer.

What is Camtasia?

Camtasia Studio is a software suite for creating video tutorials and presentations directly via screencast, or via a direct recording plug-in to Microsoft PowerPoint. When used as a video-based screen capturing software program, using Camtasia is like using a video camera to record your screen. In this case, though, the software is installed on your computer, so your screen captures are directly recorded to a digital video format with higher quality audio.

Camtasia has extensive video editing tools as well as post-production tools that allow captions to be added to video. Through Camtasia, it is possible to record, edit, produce and share course content. Editing features include callouts, transitions, zoom-in-pan, audio enhancements and more.  Screen capture videos can be recorded with or without voice narration, and can be annotated after recording.

Camtasia is available for UW-Platteville faculty/staff use

  • Camtasia is available to all UW-Platteville faculty and staff to use on university-owned Windows 10 computers or laptops. Having the software available for use at convenient times in convenient spaces will increase flexibility.
  • Camtasia can be "checked out" for 3-month periods (renewable) and be electronically delivered to computers with a UW-Platteville asset tag. A laptop with Camtasia can also be checked out through the Help Desk (request in advance).
  • With Camtasia, you can create and edit short videos for use in classroom. You can also use the editing tools in Camtasia to edit or add captions to previously created video.

How to Check Out

To have Camtasia delivered to your UW-Platteville computer for a 3-month checkout period, contact the Help Desk (342.1400 or helpdesk@uwplatt.edu) with the asset tag number of your computer or laptop.

For training and support on using Camtasia, contact the Help Desk at 608.342.1400 or helpdesk@uwplatt.edu and they will connect you with the Camtasia support you need.

Video tutorials are also available direct from TechSmith for Camtasia Studio.
