Software - Updating the Virtual Private Network (VPN) on a university device

The current version of GlobalProtect Virtual Private Network (VPN) at UW-Platteville will reach End-of-Life (EOL) by March 2021. To ensure a seamless transition, ITS will make the new version of GlobalProtect available beginning December 15, 2020. Any device still running the current version on January 6, 2021, will be updated automatically.

The Notification

If VPN is installed on your university-issued device, your computer will get a notification saying, "Required software changes will be applied to your computer.

If you click "more information", you will see "The following software will be installed on your computer... Palo Alto - GlobalProtect 5.1.6".

The Update

You may wait until January 6, 2021, and the change will occur automatically. You will also have the option to install the new version immediately or snooze the change until a later time of your choosing.

NOTE: Once the process starts, the installation may take several minutes depending on your internet connection. When the installation is complete, your device will disconnect from university network for approximately 2-3 minutes as the process continues. After the upgrade, your device should reconnect to the university network automatically. No additional steps are required.
