Support Levels and Min Configs for Computers in Halls

A quick guide to what is supported on campus to what extent and what requirements there are for connecting to the campus network

Here at UW-Platteville, we have 4 separate support levels. There is level 1 - best effort, 2 - limited support, 3 - unsupported, and 4 - not allowed.
For a more in-depth descriptions of the support levels, look here, Policy - ITS support levels

Level 1 - (Best Effort) Software in this category will get the best support we can provide, as it is recent and our staff is trained in its use, this includes:
Windows 10

Windows 8.1 (Student Computers Only)
Mac OS X 11
Mac OS X 10.15
Mac OS X 10.14

Level 2 - (Limited Support) Software in this category will get our best effort, however, staff may be unfamiliar with the ins and outs of the program.
Windows 7 (Home Premium)

Level 3 - (Unsupported) These programs are allowed on campus, however, ResNet likely will not work with the issue, and can not promise that the issue will be fixed.
Windows 2000
Windows Vista (All Editions)
Linux
All programs not in Level 1, Level 2, or prohibited by Level 4.

Level 4 - (Not Allowed). This software is not allowed on the network at all, for security and connectivity reasons.

Windows NT 4 and older
Windows XP Tablet PC Edition
Windows XP Home Edition (ResNet only)
Windows XP Professional

All computers connected to the network must have some basic software and settings, such as:

  • TCP/IP configuration must be retrieved using DHCP.
