TIPS - Locking your computer screen

Problem: You have numerous documents or windows open, but you need to step away from your computer. You don't want to close all your documents and log off, but you also do not want to leave your computer open to others. What do you do?

You can lock your PC by selecting Windows + L (for Lock) simultaneously  on your keyboard.   Your campus monitor will display the login page; your documents and windows will be secure.  When you are ready to go back to work, simple move the mouse or select any key to “wake” your monitor.  Log in as usual.

Locking can also be achieved by going to Start in the lower left and selecting Lock from the Shut Down/Log Off menu.

Mac users can use Command + Option + Eject (if you have an optical drive) or Command + Option + Power to achieve the same “sleep” mode.

If you have questions about this or other security measures, contact the ITS Help Desk at 608.342.1400 or
