Common questions regarding phones in Unified Communications at UW-Platteville
Do the dialing rules change in the new system? If you have questions, please contact the ITS Help Desk at 608.342.1400 or firstname.lastname@example.org. You may also visit the Help Desk on the first floor of the Karrmann Library.
Yes. When using a new Cisco phone, dial 8 for ALL off-campus calls except 9-1-1. This includes local (8-###-####), long distance (8-1-###-###-####), and toll-free (8-1-###-###-####). Calls made from the "old" VoIP system should follow the old format.
Can I still work hands-free?
Yes. There are several recommended headsets that work well with the new Cisco phones. You may also work hands-free with the Jabber desktop client.
Will I be able to set up speed dials?
Yes. Anyone can set up speed dials through the phone or Unified Communication Self-Service at uwplatt.edu/go/uc. Select Manage your Phone(s) and log in using your campus Net ID.
Those who manage lines for others may also want to request status keys, which allow you to see if others are on the phone or not. To request status keys, contact the ITS Help Desk at 608.342.1400 or email@example.com.
What if an employee does not want an office phone?
That is a department decision. There are several options within the unified communications system that will allow an employee to place and answer calls without a desk phone: Jabber desktop client (a “soft phone”), the Jabber mobile app, and single number reach.
Do I need additional equipment, i.e. ports or cables to use my new phone?
The new phones will utilize the same cables as your current phone. No additional equipment is needed to place and receive calls.
Will analog phones be changed at this time?
No. Courtesy phones, faxes, modems, and other analog devices are not in the scope of this project.
Can the phone be temporarily moved somewhere else?
Yes. The phone may be unplugged and moved to another location, such as a classroom, temporarily. Permanent moves should be coordinated through your Support Liaison.
Can I still make conference calls from my desk phone?
Yes. The new system can accommodate up to eight callers on a conference call.
