Hardware - Finding the computer name and asset tag

The computer and/or asset tag number should be included when reporting a problem with a campus device to the ITS Help Desk. Following are the instructions for finding this information.

Naming format

A computer is named by combining a three-letter prefix code that designates a computer type with the six-digit asset tag (eg. WKS001234).

The three prefixes are:

  • WKS – Workstation
  • LPT – Laptop
  • TAB – Tablet (any laptop with a touch screen)

Finding your computer name

The location of the computer name is slightly different depending on the type of device.

On a PC (Windows 7 or Windows 10)

1. Click Start button.

2. Begin typing Software Center, you will see software center on the start menu, click to launch it.

3. Once Software Center has launched click the Device Compliance tab. The computer name is displayed at the top of the Device Compliance page.

WIN_SelectDeviceCompliance   WIN_ComputerName

NOTE: If the computer name is anything other than a prefix and asset tag number please contact the ITS Help Desk immediately!

On a Mac OS

1. Click the Apple in upper right corner.

2. Select System Preferences…

3. Select Sharing. Computer name will be displayed at top of the Sharing window.

NOTE: If the computer name is anything other than a prefix and asset tag number please contact the ITS Help Desk immediately!

Finding the asset tag

Description: The computer asset tag is an orange tag with “Property of UW-Platteville” at the top.  It contains a barcode and small black text with the 6-digit asset tag number.

Old asset tag vs new asset tag

Location: Depends on the type of device

  • PC - normally found right next to the serial number bar code
  • Laptop - on the lid or on the underside
  • Surface Pro 4 - behind the adjustable “stand” at the base of the tablet

NOTE: Official asset tags are not found on the monitor! Monitors are no longer asset tagged. If you find an asset tag on a monitor, it is old; please disregard.

Things that do have asset tags:

  • Network printers or copiers
  • Workstations
  • Laptops
  • PC/Mac tablets, including iPads (NOTE: If your iPad does not have an asset tag, please contact the ITS Help Desk at helpdesk@uwplatt.edu to request one.)
  • Point of Sale terminals
  • Phones

Things that don’t have asset tags:

  • Cell phones
  • Label Printers
  • Monitors
  • Scanners, unless part of a copier/scanner combination

If you have questions, please contact the ITS Help Desk at 608.342.1400 or helpdesk@uwplatt.edu.  You may also visit the Help Desk on the first floor of the Karrmann Library.
