UW-Platteville Two-Factor Authentication Project Plan

Goal: The University of Wisconsin-Platteville is rolling out two-factor authentication, also known as multi-factor authentication (MFA), as part of a continued effort to increase security of University and user data. This rollout started in the spring of 2017 and will continue until all IT systems containing sensitive data require two-factor authentication.

Based on current project plans, most IT systems containing sensitive data will require MFA by January of 2019.  Moving forward, the university will default to requiring two-factor authentication for applications and IT systems that contain non-public university data.  It should be assumed that all employees will be required to enroll in Duo and use two-factor authentication by the beginning of 2019.

Information security is everyone’s responsibility. Requiring users to verify their identity using a second factor prevents anyone but the user with the second factor device from logging in, even if they know a user’s password. The extra step protects your online identity as well as our employees, students, and the University as a whole.  In addition, this effort conforms to existing UW System policy on authentication related to high-risk data.
