Kaltura - How Do I Upload a Video through My Media to a Canvas Assignment?

This tutorial will show you how to upload a video or media file through My Media to a Canvas Assignment. Once uploaded, you will have access to your media from any Canvas course site in which you are enrolled as an instructor. When using an "Assignment" to distribute media to your class, you can set a due date. When setup according to these directions, the Assignment will be a non-graded assignment and will not count toward the final grade for the course.

Before you begin:

  1. If you haven't done so, navigate to the Home area.
  2. Click the Module button.
  1. Type the module name.
  2. Click Add Module button.

Step #3

  1. Click the Add button (looks like a "+").

Step #4

  1. Select Assignment from the drop-down menu.
  2. Click New Assignment.
  3. Type the Assignment Name.
  4. Click Add Item.

  1. Click the title of the module item you just created.

  1. Click the Edit button.

In the new Rich Content Editor, click the asterisk-shaped My Media button (or click the electrical plug-shaped Apps icon > View All > My Media)

Step #8

Zoom:
  1. Click on Add New drop-down menu.
  2. Select Media Upload.

Step #9

  1. Review the terms and conditions and click on the "I agree to the above terms and conditions" checkbox.
  2. Click the Choose a file to upload button from your computer.

Zoom:

Browse to the location on your computer where you have saved your file and select the file. Note: if you downloaded media files that were uploaded through D2L's My Media, these files will be located in your "Downloads" folder.

  1. When the "Upload Completed!" message is received, type the media title.
  2. Click the Embed Setting button (looks like a gear).

Optional: On this page, you may enter tags in"Tags" field, for example, you may wish to enter a tag for your course title. This will make it easier to search for a video in the future. You may also wish to a Co-Editors (can edit this media) or a Co-Publisher (can publish this media to their own course site).

 

Step #11

Zoom:

In the "Embed Settings" area, you may change the player type and player size for the video that will be inserted into your Assignment.

You may also select a different "Start" and "End" time for the video, if you wish. This setting will start and end the video at the time you indicate rather than playing the entire clip.

  1. (Optional) To change the player type, click the Choose Player drop-down menu. Note: You may keep the "Default" player, which provide the standard player options (including the "Playback Speed"button and the "Full Screen" button). Or choose the "Sharable" player, which will provide buttons that your students can use to download the video or link to the video with a URL or embed code.
  2. (Optional) To change the player size, click the Max Embed Size drop-down menu. You may wish to make the player size smaller if you plan to add text to the Assignment description.
  3. (Optional) To set a different "Start" and "End" time for the video, select the Start at button and enter the time code for the point in the video you'd like students to begin watching. You may also wish to select the End at button and enter the time code for the point in the video you'd like students to stop watching.

Step #12

A preview of your video will appear in the HTML editing window. Note: if you receive the message "Error: No source video was found - Entry in process" proceed to the next step. This message is expected. Your video is processing and will be available soon. Don't upload your media again.

  1. Ensure that "0" is enter in the Points field.
  2. Check the box in front of "Do not count this assignment toward the final grade"
  3. If this is the first time you've uploaded media to this course site, click the Assignment Group drop-down menu and select [New Group]. If you've already created an Assignment Group for your ungraded media viewing assignments, select this group, and skip Step #13.

Step #13 (Optional)

If you've already created an Assignment Group for your ungraded media viewing assignments, skip this step.

  1. Type a Assignment Group Name that will organize your ungraded media viewing assignments (e.g. "Videos").
  2. Click Add Group.

Step #14

  1. Ensure that No Submission is selected under Submission Type.
  2. Click the calendar icon and select the date when the assignment is Due.
  3. Click the Save and Publish button.

Step #15

  1. Click the Assignments tab in the Course Navigation area.

Step #16

  1. Ensure that your ungraded media viewing Assignment Group is assigned "0" weight.

Note: if you do not see a weight, complete Steps #17 through Step #18.

Step #17 (Optional)

  1. Click the "kabob" icon on the top right.
  2. Select Assignment Groups Weight from the drop-down menu.

Step #18 (Optional)

  1. Click the checkbox in front of "Weight final grade based on assignment groups" in the popup window.
  2. Ensure that your ungraded media viewing Assignment Group is assigned "0" weight.
  3. Click Save.
