Canvas - Additional Role Request

It is possible to have an additional teacher, TA, or student grader added to your Canvas course (contingent on FERPA training). The request must be made by form to the UW-Platteville Canvas admin.

It is possible to have an additional teacher, TA, or student grader added to your Canvas course. However, it is important to note that for a person to be enrolled in your course, they must have completed FERPA training in the current academic school year. You may assume that UW-Platteville faculty and staff have had FERPA training as a condition of their employment.

Required FERPA Training

The form must be submitted to the Canvas LMS admin. However, this form will not be processed for a student enrollee to a course if that student has not completed FERPA training in the current academic year. FERPA training is managed by the Office of the Registrar.

Before completing this request form for a student enrollee to a course, verify they have taken the FERPA training which is available to them by self-enrolling and completing the Canvas online training,

Roles

Carefully review the role options before completing the request form to ensure that the individual has the desired access. For more details on each of the roles, see Course Level Roles Descriptions.

Roles that can be assigned to Faculty/Staff

Teacher

The Teacher role is used to enroll users responsible for course creation, instruction, and management. Teachers are also referred to as instructors in Canvas. In general, users with the Teacher role have permissions that allow them to moderate a course, view course data, and direct daily course communications. However, these permissions may vary among institutions. Teachers may also use the Canvas Teacher app to view some course content including announcements, assignments, discussions, and quizzes. Teachers will automatically be enrolled via SAIP into instructional courses. The teacher may enroll other users as a Teacher in their course.

Observer

Observers have limited permissions that allow them to see what is going on in a course without interrupting the flow of daily course communication. Observers cannot view and participate a course until it is published and the course has started.  Example use cases include: advisors and guest lecturers.
